The climate change and development nexus in Africa: moving beyond obligations to opportunities

Channing Ardnt, workstream leader in the SA-TIED programme and divisional director of environmental and production technology at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), presented in the third session of the Africa Month Virtual Symposium – ‘Africa’s innovations in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic’, hosted by the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Drawing from two SA-TIED publications, Faster than you think: The renewable energy revolution and developing countries, and Modelling the costs of constraining the transition to renewable energy in South Africa, he spoke about trends in coal and renewable energy use and the opportunities for Southern Africa.

His presentation contributed the discussion on the climate change and development nexus and shed light to some of the opportunities that responding to climate change may have for unlocking new avenues for development
