Labour-enhancing growth

The purpose of the workshop is to engage in a collaborative dialogue with policymakers in the areas of growth and employment in order to share the latest research results, hear lessons from policy makers, and identify the knowledge gaps where future research is needed.

Event description

High unemployment is South Africa’s single largest macroeconomic challenge, particularly among the youth. Although the employment constraints on the supply of labour are well documented and policy has targeted interventions on this side, what can be done to raise the demand for labour is much less well understood.

Recent SA-TIED research offers some interesting insights for policy makers. Firm-level data reveals the key characteristics of the types of firms that generate high employment growth alongside economic growth. Recent tax policy analysis also explores how incentives affect the demand for labour, relative to capital, and shows how trends such as automation and the search for higher productivity affect the pace of recruitment.
