Unlocking Insights: Utilising Data for Spatial Analysis

SA-TIED

SA-TIED will host a two-day introductory workshop on 16 and 17 September 2024, offering participants an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the R programming language, thematic mapping, and basic spatial modeling techniques. This workshop, delivered by Dr. Justin van Dijk, is designed to equip attendees with practical skills to enhance their spatial analysis capabilities.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Fundamentals of using R for data analysis: An introduction to R, with a focus on data manipulation and analysis.
  • Creating basic maps using R: A step-by-step guide to developing thematic maps using spatial data in R.
  • Quantifying spatial dependence: Techniques for measuring the degree of spatial dependence within datasets.
  • Incorporating spatial elements into statistical models: Practical approaches to integrating spatial components into statistical analysis.

About the instructor:

Dr. Justin van Dijk is a Lecturer in Social and Geographic Data Science at University College London. He holds a BSc and MSc in Human Geography and Planning from Utrecht University (the Netherlands) and a PhD in Transport Economics from Stellenbosch University (South Africa). His primary research interests include the analysis and visualisation of large-scale spatial datasets, as well as repurposing administrative and commercial data for research.
